LINDEW: The ability to move the ears. Relatively rare characteristics outside the normal range are of particular interest from two points of view. (1) In the first place they are of theoretical importance in the attempt to recognize heterozygotes for recessive characters with which they are possibly linked. (2) In the second place such characteristics are of practical interest for judging paternity in doubtful cases. In consideration of these problems, interest has been aroused at the Institute of Human Genetics in the investigation of somewhat uncommon characteristics. A condition for their future use in solving the forementioned problems is obviously that they are not too common or too uncommon. A series of investigations have been planned regarding the heredity of characters of the external ear in various respects. In connexion with these investigations we have tried to ascertain whether the ability to move the ears is conditioned by hereditary factors. The muscular system of the ear can be considered as rudimentary.
